Actually you can get into a nice, small capacity color laser for around $299 from a major vendor. I just happened to be pricing several of these out for someone today. The cost is way down from what it was previously but is still a bit higher than the printing cost of a monochrome printer. Even cutting just $.02/page would be a 10% cost savings in the toner which is the biggest expense.

It really depends on volumes and usage. Color lasers definitely beat color ink jet in cost most of the time.

I did not mean to imply that color lasers were of great expense - only that most small businesses do not need color printing for the bulk of their printing needs and so any extra expense may not be justified.

A decent article, particularly for those that don't "get it" (this happens to be one of my areas of responsibility in my office, incidentally)... but I do beg to differ on color laser printing. At this point, you can buy a color laser printer for less than $1000, and the output costs less than $0.20/page. It won't be a great printer, but it's not a major expense.
